How Joel Kirkpatrick Built Nationwide Visibility in a Specialized Legal Niche

Joel J. Kirkpatrick’s firm served a rare and valuable niche but had almost no way for the people who needed its services to find it. As a former ATF Special Agent, Joel had spent more than two decades defending federal employees against the full weight of the federal government, representing them in matters involving allegations of misconduct, often leading to removal from federal service, as well as revocation of security clearances, discrimination, and whistleblowing. But the firm had barely a website, no marketing engine, and a reach that stopped at Joel’s personal referral network. Despite having little to no marketing, the firm spent eight to 10 years turning away cases because Joel lacked the team and systems to take on more work. But with Crisp, Joel built the brand, the systems, and the beginnings of the team to finally match the size of his opportunity.

Joel J. Kirkpatrick, P.C.

Joel Kirkpatrick knows exactly how his clients feel when the federal government comes for their career. It wasn’t so long ago that Joel was in the same position.

As a young man, Joel dreamed of achieving two things: to be in law enforcement and to be a lawyer. So, he pursued both at once.

After earning a criminal justice degree from Ashland University, he became a Special Agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, stationed in the Detroit field division. He investigated large-scale drug trafficking organizations and organized criminal enterprises, ran undercover operations, and executed high-risk search and arrest warrants. All the while, he attended law school at night, working toward that second big dream.

But a year before he was set to graduate, everything changed. Joel was indicted for a crime he says he did not commit. Just a week earlier, he and his wife had learned she was pregnant with their first child.

“That was just a really frightening experience,” Joel said. “There was uncertainty. Would I be in prison? Would my wife be alone with our child? How long would I be there if they succeeded in this?”

He came through this experience, but facing the machinery of the federal government from the inside redefined his purpose. He would spend his career representing federal employees who are disciplined, removed, or prosecuted without due process or fairness.

That calling became a firm. Over the next 25 years, Joel built a nationwide practice defending federal employees and federal law enforcement agents before the U.S. Merit Systems Protection Board (MSPB), the EEOC, and the federal courts. He has litigated more than 100 MSPB appeals and secured multiple significant reversals, including decisions that returned federal employees to duty.

But for years, almost no one outside his referral network had ever heard of his firm.

The Results

Since partnering with Crisp in November 2024, Joel J. Kirkpatrick, P.C. went from a firm with virtually no digital footprint to the emerging authority in federal employee defense, with the numbers to show that prospective clients are now actively searching for him.

Social and Streaming Built Nationwide Awareness. Through Crisp’s Social Stack and Streaming Stack, the firm’s video content reached 179,044 YouTube views and more than 652 hours of watch time by mid-2026. This top-of-funnel awareness, built around Joel’s former federal-agent background, created visibility among potential clients that would have taken years to achieve through organic SEO alone. Together, the Social Stack and Streaming Stack account for approximately 62% of the firm’s website traffic, with the firm also generating more than 2,000 homepage impressions in 90 days, significant visibility within such a narrowly defined niche.

The Market Now Searches for Joel by Name. Organic Google searches for “Joel Kirkpatrick” grew from 78 to 778, an increase of nearly 900% in about a year. The firm now sees 892 branded impressions in a recent 30-day window, with a 68% click-through rate on searches for “Joel Kirkpatrick Attorney.” That’s not a happy accident. This growth is an indicator that more prospective clients are actively searching for Joel by name.

Visitors Are Engaging With the Message. Visitors aren’t just landing and leaving. Organic visitors engage at a rate above 50% and average roughly five actions per session, indicating that the content is resonating with the audience reaching the site. The firm’s “Federal Agent to Legal Warrior” messaging is resonating with prospective clients and helping build trust before they ever make contact.

More High-Intent Prospects Entering the Funnel. The awareness is converting into interest. In March 2026, users initiated the firm’s intake form 18 times, signaling meaningful interest from high-intent website visitors.

The Challenges

With his firm serving such a specialized niche, Joel had built something genuinely rare. However, he hadn’t built a business around it.

A Specialty Hiding in Plain Sight. Joel represents federal employees across the entire country, a niche most attorneys don’t even know about. But before Crisp, the firm barely had a website. Only people who already knew Joel or his firm knew where to turn. The people who needed him most, including federal employees suddenly facing removal or the loss of a security clearance, had no reliable way to find him online.

A Ceiling He Kept Hitting. For the better part of a decade, Joel reached the same saturation point year after year. He was convinced his practice could double, triple, even grow fivefold, but he kept turning work away because he had no team, no systems, and no way to sustainably scale. As a sole practitioner for most of his 25-year career, he wore every hat in his office. That inevitably meant both the client experience and the business itself needed more attention.

Fear Disguised as Being Busy. Joel is candid about what really held him back. “What I previously justified as being ‘too busy’ was really fear,” he said. He had the vision. He was still mustering up the courage and the infrastructure to execute on his ideas.

How We Helped

Built a Brand Around an Authentic Story. Crisp helped Joel niche down into federal employee defense by centering the firm’s marketing around his own backstory. Through Crisp’s Social Stack and Streaming Stack, his firsthand story about being a former ATF agent wrongly indicted who now defends others reached a national audience for the first time. The result was nearly 180,000 video views, a surge in branded search, and a firm that prospective clients can now discover and evaluate online before making contact.

Laying the Business Foundation. In partnership with Crisp Coach, Joel created a strong foundation he had gone decades without: a firm vision, a mission statement, defined KPIs, and a real operating framework.

“I haven’t been this excited about my practice since I first opened my doors 25 years ago,” Joel said. “The difference today is that I know how to execute my vision.”

The firm’s vision is now specific and measurable: by January 2029, Joel plans to build a team of four lawyers and four support staff, generate $3 million in annual revenue, and positively impact more than 1,200 federal employees.

Overhauling the Client Experience. After joining Crisp, Joel rebuilt the firm’s technology from the ground up, implementing modern client contact systems, intake forms, fee agreements, and secure client portals so clients can access their documents without waiting on him personally.

Crisp also pushed him to engage clients proactively rather than operating in constant firefighting mode, a shift he says fundamentally changed how he serves the federal employees who trust him with their careers.

Building a Team for the First Time. For most of his career, Joel ran a one-man show. Through Crisp Recruit, he’s hired his first full-time executive assistant, and he has plans to add several more team members in the months ahead.

His own children gave him his first sneak peek at what a team could accomplish. His son worked as a summer clerk while attending law school, and his daughter assisted with administrative and paralegal work before beginning her own legal education. They showed him how much of the firm’s administrative burden he had been carrying alone.

“The first step in leadership,” Joel said, “is admitting you need help.”

Where They Are Today

Joel J. Kirkpatrick, P.C. looks nothing like the relatively unknown solo practice it was a couple of years ago. The firm has built a growing nationwide presence that generates demand beyond Joel’s personal network, and the operational foundation to finally scale toward his vision.

Joel has also moved into a new office, refreshed the firm’s branding, made his first outside hire, and begun implementing AI-assisted workflows to handle rising case volume. New clients increasingly report finding the firm through its marketing rather than through traditional referrals, a strong indication that the brand is generating demand beyond Joel’s existing network.

With less time spent buried in administrative work, Joel also plans to expand the pro bono First Amendment and constitutional work he’s done for 15 years, and to build a firm strong enough to one day pass on to his son and daughter.

“I always knew the vision existed inside me,” Joel said. “I simply didn’t know how to execute it.” Now he does.
