Who is Mark Lanier?
Mark is the founder of The Lanier Law Firm and, since its inception in 1990, he has been actively involved in fighting for integrity in the legal system and justice for victims of unfair play. Whether representing individuals or corporations, he is an attorney who has stood firm in his commitment to serve his clients to the best of his ability.
And he has demonstrated his ability to be second to none.
From setting the standard with three early wins related to the painkiller Vioxx totaling more than $300 million, to a $9 billion verdict over the diabetes drug Actos in 2014, The Lanier Law Firm has established itself as a firm that doesn’t mess around when lives are at stake.
Mark earned the two largest products liability verdicts of 2016 against Johnson & Johnson and its subsidiary Depuy Orthopaedics, both related to the health care Goliath’s faulty hip replacement technology. These two verdicts together totaled over $1.2 billion. Lanier secured another $247 million verdict in a third case related to Depuy’s metal-on-metal hip implants in 2017.
Lanier took on Johnson & Johnson yet again in a high-profile trial in 2018. In this case, Mark and his team secured a record-breaking $4.69 billion verdict for 22 women who alleged their ovarian cancer was caused by asbestos-contaminated talcum powder.
His work to advocate for victims of injustice has earned him countless accolades in recent years as well. Just a few of these awards include:

To convey the details of the 2018 Johnson & Johnson case in court, Lanier used a knife and a block of cheese as props to demonstrate how talc is mined, a bale of hay for showing the challenge of finding asbestos fibers in talcum powder, and hand-drawn illustrations depicting the asbestos-filled talcum powder physically pushing one of the victims off a cliff.
These unorthodox methods are perfect examples of how storytelling plays a central role in Lanier’s courtroom strategy. And his results are a testament to how successful that strategy is.
By connecting to judges and juries on an emotional level and presenting his arguments in an engaging and persuasive way, he’s able to get his message across more powerfully than with simple facts and figures.
Mark’s knack for connecting complex details with concrete application also lends itself well to his ministry work. He teaches a weekly Sunday school class on Biblical Literacy to a group of over 700 students and has written several books connecting faith and scripture to daily life. He also founded a number of organizations inspired by his faith.
