Being a great attorney isn’t enough to guarantee a successful practice. If you want to build and maintain a prosperous firm, your business acumen matters just as much as your legal skill set. Do you truly have what it takes to run a business?
Competition for new clients and cases is increasing each and every day, and one of the biggest challenges many attorneys face is standing out among the fierce competition.
What can you do to grow your practice to its greatest potential? And, what legal marketing decisions separate thriving firms from the ones that struggle?
In order to find out, we sat down with 5 top attorneys to discuss key ways to differentiate your practice and market your firm. Here are their legal marketing tips:
What piece of advice do you wish you were given when you started your law firm?
“Be yourself. Know yourself; strengths and weaknesses, warts and all. Improve upon your weaknesses. Be instinctive.
There is no magic bullet, no secret handshakes, no winning buzzwords, and no recipe for success. Treat your clients like gold. Engage them. Be creative. Try everything. Hit hard.”
“Focus on the long term. There are so many short term needs that arise that it is easy to try to find a solution for them without focusing on the long term.”
“Develop systems and invest in your marketing.”
“Have a mentor in each practice area ready and willing to answer your questions.”
What advice would you give to attorneys struggling to differentiate themselves and grow their legal practice?
“I’d advise other attorneys to consider a video to distinguish their brand or to create a brand. There is no better way.”
“There is no magic bullet, and you have to spend money to make money. I believe it’s important to resist the temptation to find the cheapest option. Choosing a lawyer is no different – a great lawyer can charge more and devote more time and effort to fewer clients. You get what you pay for.”
“Don’t be afraid to advertise and market. The initial expense is scary at first, and there are companies out there who will take advantage of you, but if you choose the right one they are worth their weight in gold.”
