Episode 498 — When to Force Progress and When to Play the Long Game
Most stalled decisions in your firm aren’t complicated. They’re just missing a deadline.
In this episode of The Game Changing Attorney Podcast, Michael and Jessica Mogill dig into the tension every growth-minded firm owner knows well: when to force a decision and when to give it real time. This week’s questions come from listeners caught in exactly that spot, unsure if they’re moving too slowly or just refusing to rush something that actually matters. Michael lays out a simple way to tell the difference, and what it costs you when you get it wrong in either direction.
Here’s what you’ll learn:
- Why some decisions only need a deadline and fewer decision-makers to move
- How to tell a stalled initiative from one that just needs more time
- What it takes to reset expectations when a promotion doesn’t go as planned
Your next decision doesn’t have to sit in limbo for another quarter.

Show Notes:
Every extra decision-maker adds friction you don’t need. “If your goal is to get things done faster, reduce the number of decision-makers. Complexity is what creates all sorts of friction.”
A high-value payoff is worth a longer runway. “If I can get this right, it’s going to be millions of dollars. Am I expecting a solution in 90 days? Probably not. It could take me a year, maybe two, but the upside for the longevity of the firm is going to be massive.”
Great individual performers don’t automatically make great managers. “Sometimes you pull your best person out and put them in a different role, and that alone was not a good decision.”
Unclear instructions produce unclear outcomes. “It’s back to the AI example: garbage in, garbage out. If you’re giving her garbage, what are you going to get in return?”
Delegating well takes more than a quick ask. “It’s almost like you’re prompting a human being.”
