Show Notes:
John Morgan on the one trait that actually predicts success. “Whenever I meet somebody, I always ask what they did as a kid. When people used to tell me they were a paper boy, I knew I had a winner there. I knew that person had a seed. Because paper boys, those are some working sons of bitches.”
Marcus Lemonis has scaled a business from zero to $7 billion, and says the fundamentals never change. “The principles behind running a small coffee shop and running a $7 billion business are ultimately the same.”
Kevin O’Leary has funded hundreds of companies on Shark Tank, and ideas were never what separated the winners. “Great ideas are a dime a dozen. Executional skills are really hard to find.”
Alex Hormozi built a following by saying what other entrepreneurs won’t, starting with this. “There’s a lot of positive jargon put out by social media influencers, like ‘follow your passion.’ But the thing is, when you’re starting out, everything sucks.”
Kim Scott wrote Radical Candor and has coached CEOs across Silicon Valley, and her rule for spotting toxicity on a team is blunt. “Just remember, it’s better to have a hole than an asshole on your team. If someone bullies others, they are creating more harm than good.”
Tim Grover trained Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant, and says winning starts with what you’re willing to tolerate. “As people that want to win, you really have to think about what you’re willing to really get dirty with. Are you willing to put yourself in an uncivilized frame of mind where you’re controlling everything that you possibly can control?”
Jesse Cole turned a struggling minor league team into a global phenomenon, and says the trick was never strategy. “The key to buy-in for any organization, and I know there’s business leaders listening to this, is it’s not just telling people, ‘This is how we do it.’ It’s stories.”
