Episode 503 — Escaping Poverty to Create a Billion-Dollar, Flamin’ Hot Brand with Richard Montañez
What if the only thing standing between you and your billion-dollar idea is the fear of looking ridiculous?
In this encore episode of The Game Changing Attorney Podcast, Michael Mogill sits down with Richard Montañez, the man behind the creation of Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, to unpack the mindset that took him from a janitor at Frito-Lay to a billion-dollar brand builder. Richard shares the childhood lessons, the risks he took, and the relentless hunger that drove him to create opportunity where none existed. He makes the case that owning your background instead of hiding it is what separates the people who break through from the ones who stay stuck.
Here’s what you’ll learn:
- Why opportunity has to be created, not waited for
- How to spot the idea everyone else is too “expert” to see
- What it takes to grow from pioneer to settler to purposeful leader
Stop waiting for someone to hand you an opportunity and go create your own.

Show Notes:
He grew up being taught exactly how to stay poor. “When you live in poverty, you are taught how to live in poverty. You are taught how to survive poverty, which is totally wrong. You should never survive poverty. You should escape it. And that’s what I did. I began to escape it.”
A grade-school instinct to fit in almost cost him everything that made him successful. “As much as I wanted to fit in and be like everyone else, I finally realized I was never created to fit in. I was always created to stand out.”
Waiting for your shot is the one strategy that guarantees you’ll never get it. “When it comes to opportunity, opportunity is never given to you. Opportunity is created. Opportunity is something that you see, that you experience.”
The moment right before a breakthrough usually feels like complete humiliation. “Many times, greatness will come in a ridiculous form. I think every time greatness comes, it comes in ridiculous form. If you’re not willing to look ridiculous, you will never achieve your greatness.”
A walk down a grocery store aisle changed the entire direction of his career. “A revelation is something that was always there, but it’s been unveiled or revealed to you. All you need is one revelation to create a revolution.”
Winning people over has less to do with polish than most leaders assume. “The truth is, words come from culture. Every culture has words. If you understand the culture, and you’re communicating, you’re going to be successful.”
