Episode 496 — Permanent Solutions to Recurring Problems

If your team keeps bringing you problems instead of solutions, the pattern started with you, not them.

In this episode of The Game Changing Attorney Podcast, Michael and Jessica Mogill tackle three listener questions that all trace back to the same root problem: staying stuck in reactive mode. From training a team to solve its own problems to enforcing adherence to a process everyone claims to support, this episode unpacks why solving fires as they come keeps a firm from ever building the systems that prevent them.

Here’s what you’ll learn:

  • Why solving every problem for your team keeps them from solving any problem on their own
  • How one four-word question shifts a team from asking to thinking
  • What it actually takes to enforce adherence to a process your team already has

Your team’s problem-solving muscle only grows if you stop doing the lifting for them.

Show Notes:

Every problem you solve for your team teaches them to stop trying to solve it themselves. “Why would anybody solve problems on their own if you solve all their problems for them?”

A documented process means nothing without something forcing people to actually use it. “Just because you have a process doesn’t mean people are going to follow said process.”

Chasing what’s loudest today guarantees you’ll never get to what matters most. “If you focus on just the urgent, you’re always going to be at the mercy of what is important.”

Constantly putting out fires can feel like proof you’re indispensable, right up until it becomes the reason your firm can’t grow. “I see a lot of leaders who wear this as a badge of honor. They like firefighting because it’s an ego thing. It makes them feel that they are valued and that they make a contribution because they’re just solving things as they come.”

There will always be another fire, which is exactly the argument for building the systems now instead of waiting for calm that never comes. “There’s always going to be another problem. But when are you actually laying the groundwork to prevent future issues? Things don’t get better until you start to lay that foundation.”
