Episode 413 — AMMA — How to Lead When You Feel Like a Fraud

What do you do when there’s no one to turn to and every decision rests on you?

In this episode of The Game Changing Attorney Podcast, Michael and Jessica Mogill answer raw, real questions from law firm owners navigating isolation, leadership doubts, and the pressure to stay strong when everything feels uncertain. From managing tough team decisions to questioning your purpose as a business owner, Michael shares why staying in the arena, even when you’re tired, scared, or second-guessing yourself, is the mark of true leadership.

Here’s what you’ll learn:

  • How to make hard calls when you have no one to confide in
  • Why every leader questions their purpose and how to push through the low points
  • What it takes to build a trusted community that keeps you grounded and growing

When the weight of leadership feels heaviest, that’s when you prove you’re built for it.

Show Notes:

Isolation is one of leadership’s hidden costs. “You keep it all bottled up inside. You feel alone no matter how big your practice grows. One of the reasons we created this community is so you can connect with others who’ve been through the same battles and realize you’re not alone.”

You’re not the only one struggling. “No matter how bad it is, you are not the first law firm owner to experience it. You might look at another firm and think they don’t have problems like you do — but they probably have the exact same ones, maybe even worse.”

Pain is part of the process. “Sometimes when you’re in the shit, that’s just part of the journey. You’re not doing anything wrong. That’s the chapter you’re in before the next one — and your ability to navigate it is what shapes you into the person who can handle the next level.”

Every leader questions their purpose. “To question whether you’re cut out for this is something every single entrepreneur goes through. Because you’re going to get punched in the mouth and in the gut on a daily basis. It’s not a marathon or a sprint — it’s a marathon sprint.”

Growth doesn’t eliminate problems. “The problems don’t go away as you grow — you just graduate to different ones. The problems I have today would have killed me early on. You build up to them, like lifting heavier weight over time.”

Vulnerability is strength. “Earlier in my career, I thought I had to be the all-knowing leader. Don’t show weakness, don’t admit when you’re wrong. That didn’t take me very far. Sometimes the best thing you can say to your team is, ‘I don’t know — what do you think?'”

Progress requires letting go of control. “The only way to make progress is if you’re not involved in every single decision. You want to create self-managing teams that can operate without you. That’s how you move forward.”
