Episode 387 — AMMA — Stop Cleaning Up Their Mess: The Secret to a Self-Sufficient Team

You didn’t build a business to become a full-time babysitter. So why are you still cleaning up your team’s mistakes?

In this episode of The Game Changing Attorney Podcast, Michael and Jessica Mogill tackle one of the most frustrating growth blockers law firm owners face: a team that can’t seem to operate without you. If you’re constantly redoing work, stepping in to fix repeated mistakes, or avoiding hard conversations to keep the peace, this conversation will show you how to shift from micromanaging to building a truly self-sufficient team.

Here’s what you’ll learn:

  • Why repeated mistakes are a sign of poor leadership, not just poor performance
  • The real cost of being the good guy
  • How to coach your team without doing their job for them

If you want to scale, you have to stop saving everyone. It’s time to lead like a coach, not a crutch.

Show Notes:

Stop micromanaging and start leading. “If you’re constantly redoing your team’s work, it’s not just a performance issue. It’s a leadership issue.”

Clarity is more powerful than control. “People can’t meet your expectations if they don’t know what good looks like. If you haven’t defined it, you can’t expect them to deliver it.”

Mistakes are fine. Repeated mistakes are not. “Everyone slips up now and then. But if someone keeps making the same mistake, that’s a sign they’re not learning — and that’s a bigger problem.”

You’re not helping them by stepping in. “Every time you fix it for them, you take away the opportunity for them to grow. You’re not developing people. You’re keeping them dependent.”

Don’t be the one doing all the thinking. “If your team keeps bringing you problems without solutions, you’re burning your brainpower for things they should own. That’s not leadership — that’s enablement.”

Coaching is not coddling. “Teaching someone how to think through a challenge is part of the job. But you can’t do it forever. At some point, they either step up or step out.”

You can’t lead if you’re afraid of being disliked. “If your need to be liked is greater than your desire to lead, you’re going to stall your firm’s growth and keep your team stuck.”

Stop hiring headaches. “You are literally paying someone every two weeks to create stress and frustration in your life. That’s a choice — and you can make a better one.”
