Show Notes:
Survival mode sharpens your instincts. But it limits your growth. “You don’t want to go into the complete opposite direction and become one of these YOLO-type people that’s just blowing money and taking crazy risks, but if you’re stuck in survival mode, you’re going to be too risk-averse to grow.”
Unspoken expectations always lead to resentment. “You’re disappointed because you have an expectation, and it doesn’t match up with reality — but did you communicate that expectation to them?”
If you’re constantly disappointed, look in the mirror. “If you want to be disappointed in someone, the most productive person to be disappointed in is really you, the leader.”
Strategic thinking is a muscle. Build it daily. “You probably aren’t very good at it the first time you do it… but as you start practicing this more and more, you get better at it.”
Do not gamble with what keeps the lights on. “I would never make a bet that threatens the livelihood of our team or our family. At that point, you are playing with house money.”
If a team member is surprised by feedback, that is on you. “One of the worst things you can do to someone is surprise them with a performance conversation — that means there were unspoken expectations.”
