Joe Fried
Niching for impact. “I’ve always felt that I needed to be a subject matter expert in addition to being a good lawyer. It was about niching the world down so that I could do something meaningful. Starting in areas like birth trauma, then product liability, and eventually trucking, each step was about specializing in a way that mattered.”
Real and raw authenticity. “Every morning, I remind myself that I’ve got to be the most credible person in the room. Authenticity involves vulnerability, being open about not being the most honest person and working on changing that. What you learn when you practice vulnerability is the opposite of what you expect — you get embraced instead of rejected.”
More than a paycheck. “Find what your passion is and what you want to spend your life doing. If it’s just about money, you’re missing the point. Money will take care of itself if you have passion. It’s about the challenge, the consistency, and the drive that comes with doing what you love.”
Laura Wasser
Building a brand with a purpose. “We always tried to keep a low profile at our firm, but when we started the online divorce platform, I was willing to come out and say, ‘Hey, there’s a better way of doing this.’ Helping people allows you to promote a positive brand.”
Knowing when to say no. “We don’t do crazy. Being able to say no to the overindulged and maintaining limits helps in delivering the best outcome for clients. It’s crucial to ensure that clients are realistic about what they can expect.”
Lessons from the A-list. “The biggest difference between A-list cases and others, beyond media attention, is the expectation of being told yes. Our firm maintains boundaries and provides tough love because it’s not about making friends; it’s about advocating for what’s possible and realistic.”
Jan Dils
Slogan to success. “Being an early adopter for marketing, especially developing our slogan, really was the catalyst for our brand. Trust yourself and believe in what you’re offering, so people know where and how to seek help.”
Lessons in resilience. “When I passed the bar and my boss left unexpectedly, I was thrown into the deep end. Arguing cases in the Supreme Court of West Virginia taught me under pressure, preparing me for anything and everything in my career.”
Balance fuels growth. “Females face unique challenges that require honesty and support. Having a supportive home life and family has been crucial for maintaining my career, and I want to support others in realizing that balance.”
John Uustal
Fighting for forgotten cases. “I have a particular interest in cases turned down by other law firms. It’s about proving that something can be done for those who might otherwise have no advocate, turning no into a yes.”
Small picture to big vision. “Years can pass with day-to-day work that doesn’t align with your ultimate goals. Always consider the long term to avoid being stuck in the grind without direction, and ensure you spend time where it matters, both personally and professionally.”
