Episode 317 — AMMA — Crushing Mediocrity: The Art of Setting and Meeting Higher Expectations

Do you constantly feel like you’re playing catch-up in a league full of high achievers?

In this episode of The Game Changing Attorney Podcast, Michael Mogill dives into the nuances of navigating success, both individually and as a business owner. From harnessing the power of a growth mindset to redefining standards within your team, this conversation uncovers practical strategies to elevate your practice.

You’ll learn:

  • How reframing comparisons and modeling the habits of more successful peers can fuel your personal and professional growth
  • The importance of clear communication and alignment with your team to ensure consistency toward bigger goals for your business
  • The value of supporting others on their paths to foster a sincere and growth-focused community

Whether facing inflated egos or celebrating varied success stories, learn how to embrace challenges and foster an environment where everyone’s journey — no matter the stage — is acknowledged and supported.

Show Notes:

The growth mindset advantage. “If you find yourself thinking others are miles ahead of you, flip that narrative. Being surrounded by those who have accomplished what you aspire to achieve is actually the ideal environment for growth. Those successful individuals are proof that your goals are attainable. Instead of feeling behind, study their habits and decisions to understand what has worked for them. Spend time around them, learn, and adapt their successful behaviors. It’s not just encouraging; it’s essential to recalibrating what’s possible for you.”

Alignment and accountability. “Communicate clearly with your team about the standards and goals for the firm. If your team believes they’ve already reached the pinnacle based on past successes, they may be operating under an outdated standard. It’s crucial to align everyone with the current goals and standards. Think of it as re-setting expectations to match where the firm is heading, not where it has been. Embrace and communicate the need to evolve continuously, ensuring all team members understand how their contributions play into the larger vision.”

Celebrating journeys, not just milestones. “Success looks different for everyone. Comparing your achievements to others’ isn’t productive. Acknowledge where you came from; what once seemed impossible is now your norm. Focus on your own journey, and recognize others for their progress, despite where they are in theirs. This mindset not only fosters personal growth but encourages a supportive community within the legal field.”

Ego in check, vision in focus. “Having team members with big egos can be challenging, especially when they aren’t delivering the results needed. The solution is clear, honest communication about the current performance expectations and the vision for the firm. It’s not about diminishing confidence but refining it to align with growth. Use examples from the sports world where standards evolve over time. You don’t want a complacent team; you want one striving for championships.”

Support through sincerity. “Offer genuine support to those around you, regardless of their current accomplishments. Everyone’s journey is different, and each stage deserves recognition. A law firm owner who remembers their own beginnings understands the courage needed to venture into the unknown, rather than focusing on who’s gained more or less. Be sincere. Support their achievements and encourage their potential.”
