Episode 302 — AMMA — Leading with Integrity: How to Compete Ethically

Contrary to popular belief, if you’re too obsessed with your competition, it’s going to kill your business.

It’s time to take a new approach.

In this episode of The Game Changing Attorney Podcast, Michael Mogill pulls back the curtain on the hard truths of running a law firm in today’s cutthroat legal landscape.

Prepare yourself for an unfiltered look at:

  • How to stay ahead when competitors play dirty and bend the rules
  • Why relentless execution always beats big ideas — and why most firms fail without it
  • The deadly impact of ego on leadership, and how it can destroy your business from the inside out

This no-holds-barred conversation is all about grit, focus, and playing to win. If you’re ready to step up and lead with ruthless efficiency, even when the odds seem stacked against you, then this one’s for you.

Show Notes:

Cheaters never truly win. “In every community, you’ll find bad actors — people who cut corners, ignore ethical guidelines, and roll the dice with their practices. And while that might work for them in the short term, it doesn’t mean you should follow suit. The right move is to focus on what you can control. Hone in on your strengths. You don’t have to cheat to win. Be so good that even if others resort to shortcuts, they still can’t beat you. Concentrate on delivering exceptional client service, building a strong community presence, and running your operations like a well-oiled machine. From case management to marketing, everything should be precise and efficient. The key is building a team and culture so strong that even when others try to cut corners, you remain untouchable.”

Execution beats ideas. “If you focus on improving every day, treat your practice like a business, and prioritize client experience, you’ll be in the top 10 percent. Why? Because most firms don’t execute. Even if someone steals your playbook, it doesn’t mean they’ll pull it off. Ideas are worthless without execution. Consistency, customer service, and operational efficiency are the real game changers. If you get these right, your competition won’t stand a chance.”

Ego trap. “Some firms get a few wins under their belt and think they’re untouchable. They’re constantly looking backward, convinced of their greatness. But here’s the truth: Ego comes before the fall. This isn’t just about having results — it’s about sustaining them. You see it in business all the time. Ego without performance is a recipe for disaster. The minute someone starts relying on past success rather than evolving, they set themselves up for failure. Stay humble, stay hungry, and keep moving forward.”

Data vs. ego. “Let’s look at the data. Are they performing or just full of themselves? If they’ve missed targets for the last quarter, where’s the ego coming from? Results speak louder than ego. But even when performance is high, you have to ask, ‘How sustainable is this behavior? If you’re difficult to work with or unable to collaborate, you’re only holding yourself back.’ Connect it to their goals — whether it’s financial growth or personal development — and show them how their attitude is killing their progress.”

Aligned on results. “Every quarter, every week, and even every day, we focus on key priorities. Each marketing team member has their own KPIs, and we realign on these constantly. At the end of each day, the team submits their top three priorities for tomorrow, and they check off whether they completed today’s top three. These aren’t just tasks; they’re critical results tied to metrics. That’s how we ensure we’re not just busy but actually moving the needle. Execution happens when everyone knows what’s expected and accountability is built into the system.”
