Better than yesterday. “I want to be an industry leader. I want to be at the top of my game in my field and get better at my crafts every day. If you want to be a lawyer in Georgia, you must take 12 hours of continued education, and I have around 200 hours. That’s simply because I love it. It’s made me a smarter person in the process, and I believe that’s one of the main ways I’ve been able to build my brand. People automatically think I’m knowledgeable when it comes to family law. I’m not worried about competition. There’s always going to be other options out there, as there should be. I’m focused on doing right by the family who needs me and hires me to represent them, and that’s what I care about the most.”
Is the grass actually greener? “When it comes to people getting divorced, the main reasons I hear all the time are because of infidelity or financial infidelity and things of that nature, but I believe that the real reason is because a couple has lost focus of why they got together in the first place. They don’t remember why they wanted to be together in the first place. Sure, there are times when someone in the relationship is just a you-know-what, and that’s why they get divorced. Most of the time, however, it’s because they think the grass is greener on the other side. It’s human nature. Sometimes the grass is greener. Sometimes it’s not.”
Make a name for yourself. “I happen to be a social person. I happen to be someone who gets out there. I like going out. I like just showing up. I like going to people’s parties and bankruptcy seminars where I don’t know any of the lawyers and meeting people. So that’s worked for me. But if I wasn’t like that, I would encourage you to go where you’re uncomfortable. Not only because you’re going to meet people that you’ve not met before, but the people that are competing feel the same way. They don’t want to go there. So if you’re out there, you might be the only one in your industry that’s doing so. You have to get out and meet people if you want to create more business and traction in your law firm.”
Passion and skill. “I don’t think you can be good at something if you’re not passionate about it. I don’t think you can really be passionate about something if you’re not good at it. Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and Kobe Bryant are three people that are at the top of their game. Think about your mental image of all three of them. I bet you’re picturing them all smiling. That’s because they all love what they do and are extremely passionate about their chosen profession.”
Live in the moment. “There’s something more special about a mental image rather than one on your phone. Remembering it in your mind is a feeling you’ll have forever because you were actually there in that moment. When we take pictures of something on our phone, it’s not so much the picture of the event, but it’s really a verification that you actually witnessed it and you were there when it happened and makes people feel good and special and important.”
What does being a game changer mean to you? “I don’t want to discount the name game changer — because I think it’s a great name — but if it were up to me, I’d call it a game improver. If I’m going to change the game, I want to make sure I’m doing it for the better. If I’m going to change family law, I want to leave it better than when I found it. Whatever the change is, I want it to be positive. If I do my job right, I’m helping even one family, and that’s a win in my book.”
